Messerschmitt Me 410A-1 U5+FE Hornisse night fighter of Lt. Rudolf Abrahamczik, 14./KG2, late 1943. As part of the Luftwaffe’s Fernnachtjagd long-range night fighter intruder force, Me 410’s hunted RAF bombers when they were at their most vulnerable. Typically when the bombers were taking off or when they were returning to base after a mission. With its combination of speed and heavy armament, the Me 410 proved to be a formidable nocturnal predator. The camouflage scheme of U5+FE was optimised for prowling Britain’s night skies.
