Fairey Swordfish Mk.1 - P4154/L4M, Battle of Taranto, southeastern Italy. Iconic World War II biplane torpedo bomber of Lt(A) H. Swayne RN (Pilot) and Sub Lt(A) J. Buscall RNVR (Observer). On the night of 11th/12th November 1940, the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm (FAA) launched Operation Judgement against the Italian Fleet moored in Taranto Harbour. This was Britain’s first all-aircraft ship-to-ship naval attack, and consisted of twenty-one Swordfish, half armed with torpedoes and the other half armed with bombs and parachute flares. The attack was deemed a success, and heralded the impact that naval aviation would have on traditional big-gun Battleships. Diecast composite model in authentic Battle of Taranto markings. Folding wings, rotating prop, and pilot figures. Comes with a display stand. Approx. 15cm x 19cm (6” x 7.5”).
