Spitfire MK. Vb BM592, Wing Cdr Alois Vasatko, DFC, Exeter (Czechoslovak) Wing, June 1942. The Mk V was the most produced Spitfire variant and the main version throughout 1941. With a max. speed of 371 mph, and armed with 2 x 20-mm cannon and 4 x 0.303 inch Browning machine guns, it could also carry other external ordnance. Alois “Amos” Vasatko fought with the French Air Force and then the RAF. When the RAF 312th Czechoslovak Squadron was established, on May 3 1942, Vasatko was its first Wing Commander.
