CF-104 Starfighter

A modified version of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, built in Canada under license by Canadair. The CF-104 was optimized for the nuclear strike/reconnaissance role, fitted with Search and Range RADAR dedicated to air-to-ground mode only and provisioned for a 4-camera ventral reconnaissance pod. Other differences included modified undercarriage and initial replacement of the 20 mm M61A1 cannon with an extra fuel cell.

The CF-104 entered service with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1962 as a supersonic interceptor, were it was used primarily for low level strike and reconnaissance. Gradually phased out between 1982 and 1987.

Armament: When the CF reverted to a conventional attack role, the M61A1 was refitted, along with Snakeye iron bombs, cluster bombs, and rocket pods. AIM-9 Sidewinders were fitted to Norway and Denmark Air Force CFs in a twin-rail centreline station and wingtip rails.
