Lockheed P-38J Lightning

The only American fighter in production throughout American involvement in WW II. A formidable fighter and interceptor, it was also used for dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing, photo recon, and long-range escort. The P-38 was used most successfully in the Pacific as the United States Army Air Forces primary long-range fighter until late in the war. ‘Hill's Angels’ was flown by 1st Lt. Allen Hill, USAAF 8th Fighter Group, 80th Fighter Squadron.

Nicknamed ‘fork-tailed devil’ by the Germans and ‘two planes, one pilot’ by the Japanese. Its greatest virtues were long range, heavy payload, high speed, fast climb, and concentrated firepower. It was a formidable fighter, interceptor and attack aircraft, extremely forgiving and could be mishandled in many ways.

Armament: 1 x 20mm cannon, 4 x 12.7mm machine guns (all clustered in the nose). Up to 4,000lbs of under-wing ordnance, options included 10 x 5in HE rockets, 2 x Drop Tanks, 2 x 500lb bombs.
