F-14A Tomcat

Grumman F-14 Tomcat: Supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, swing-wing, carrier-based fighter. Entered service in 1972 as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter and fleet defence interceptor.

The F-14A was the initial all-weather interceptor intended to provide the US Navy with a Mach 2.0 air superiority fighter capable of both long and short range fleet defence. Its versatility also saw it used in tactical air recon and air-to-ground strike roles.

Although used briefly to fly protective patrols over Vietnam, the F-14 first saw combat against Libyan Air Force Sukhoi fighters in 1981. Numerous upgrades saw improvements to engines, electronics, flight control systems and armaments. The F-14 remained in service until 2009, although US Navy versions were replaced by F/A-18 Super Hornets in 2006.

Armament: 20 mm MK 61A1 ‘Gatling Gun’ cannon, up to 13,000 lb of ordnance (a variety of Phoenix, Sparrow, and Sidewinder air-to-air missiles).
